Mill And Pave

Mill and Pave involves the removal of the existing asphalt from the road surface with new asphalt. It’s used for:
  • Severe Damage: Deep cracks or heavy wear that overlays cannot fix.
  • Uneven Surfaces: To level out significant irregularities before repaving.
  • High Traffic: For roads with heavy use requiring substantial repair.

Methodology and process involved in the mill and pave procedure

A plant trial for the premix must be conducted to ensure the quality of the asphalt meets the standards specified in the approved Project Quality Plan (PQP).

Mill the existing bituminous asphalt layer using milling machine to the specified depth to remove cracks and defects.

Verify the milling thickness to ensure compliance with the work specification.

Use the dump truck to collect milled asphalt and transport it to the designated recycling or disposal site, following environmental regulations and project requirements.

Use a power broom (rotary type) and/or other suitable equipment to ensure that the surface is free from any contaminants before applying the tack coat, free from loose debris.

A trial lay of the premix shall be conducted to achieve optimal compaction based on two (2) rolling patterns (choose one that achieves the optimum compaction with maximum compaction effort).

The following day, a coring test shall be performed to measure the thickness of the premix.

Core samples then shall be sent to the laboratory for compaction testing and loose samples tested for Marshall Tests.

Paving work shall resume according to the appropriate rolling pattern during Trial Lay to achieve an optimum compaction.

The following day, perform coring tests to measure the asphalt layer thickness. The average over 100 meters must meet the required thickness, with a minimum thickness at any point within ±5 mm.

Core samples shall be sent to the laboratory for compaction testing to verify the density of the asphalt layer to ensure it achieves at least 98% of the Marshall density.

Use the dump truck to collect milled asphalt and transport it to the designated recycling or disposal site, following environmental regulations and project requirements.

Apply temporary road marking for safety of road users. Then, apply Permanent road marking work shall be carried out after 72 hours.

The defect liability period for the project is either 6 or 12 months, depending on the project cost.
